Today is the 24th birthday of a gorilla who became an internet celebrity after a video surfaced of him walking like a person.
We’re still here! Ambam, the man-like gorilla, turns 24. (and 6ft tall beast is STILL king of the internet)
Normally, gorillas go about on all fours, but at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park in Hythe, Kent, Ambam has perfected balance on his two hind legs.
His sister Tamba and her two-year-old son Kabale, according to a park spokesperson, share his habit of walking like a human.
Actresses Julie Christie and Sarah Michelle Gellar, cellist Julian Lloyd Webber, and actor Robert Carlyle also share Ambam’s birthdate.
Ambam, Port Lympne’s largest gorilla, weighs 220kg and has a lifetime of 30 to 50 years. In 1990, he was born at the park’s sister site, Howletts.
After getting unwell when he was a year old, he was taken away from his mother Shumba and hand-raised for a few months.
Because they live in some of Africa’s most thick and isolated jungles, the exact number of western lowland gorillas is unknown.
However, wildlife specialists estimate that their numbers have decreased by more than 60% in the last 20 to 25 years owing to 𝑝𝑜𝑎𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔, 𝑖𝑙𝑙𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠, and Ebola-related death.
