Did you know: consuming too many vitamins can be harmful to your health

A dose of vitamin C against fatigue here, a dietary supplement there, we say to ourselves that it can only do us good. But are we sure? Zoom on the dangers of an excess of vitamins in the diet.

Should we consume more and more vitamins? This is the question that Derek Muller, a science popularizer, tries to answer in an Arte documentary. After the viewing, we questioned ourselves in turn. And the verdict is surprising, to say the least.

Plain yogurt, muesli, banana, and orange for breakfast are already vitamin C, vitamin B, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, beta-carotene, calcium, iodine, and fiber ingested in a single meal. The list is already long for a banal daily breakfast. If we add to this a balanced lunch and dinner, it is the assurance of filling the recommended quota of vitamins.

It would therefore be enough for a balanced and varied diet to provide the body with everything it needs. However, some take in addition to dietary supplements, in the form of drops or tablets, to increase their intake of vitamins and minerals. The more you take, the better?

Vitamins: our essential allies for good health

Vitamins are complementary and essential for the proper functioning of the body. That, there is no photo. They slow down the aging of our cells, protect our vision, keep us away from scurvy and rickets, and so on. If there’s one thing we’re sure of, it’s that vitamins are our friends. But up to what dose?

It is difficult to imagine that these vital products(hence the name vital-amine which gave vitamin for the anecdote) and self-service can be dangerous for our health. So much so that one in three people consumes it, according to Derek Muller. So we take, again and again, who to face the small inconveniences of winter, who to “prevent rather than cure”, without really asking questions. But does it make sense?

When to take vitamin supplements?

If our plate does not see the color of fruits and vegetables all week, we lack protein or we have osteoporosis, obviously, we will need vitamins, in addition, to counterbalance our dietary deficits and ward off the dangers of a deficiency. But what about when you take supplements without having a deficiency?

Whether it’s to counter the little hassles of winter or to give ourselves a boost when we lack energy, there are many reasons that push us to take vitamins in addition to our diet. In this kind of situation, when supplements are taken on a short-term basis and in small quantities, there is usually nothing to worry about.

And when to stop?

On the other hand, it is the prolonged excess that is at risk. “An excess of vitamins can kill just as much as a deficiency,” warns the Arte channel on its press release, although these effects are very rare and depend on the number of vitamins consumed. And for good reason: prostate cancer, poisoning, neurotoxic reactions, liver and kidney disorders: the potential consequences of a surplus of vitamins can be harmful.

Verdict: Neither too much nor too little, we must find the right balance

As we have seen, dietary supplements are not necessarily dangerous for your health. But, like everything, you have to know how to be reasonable and only take it when your body needs it. The plus should not be seen as the best, far from it. The best solution to stay healthy is to have a varied and balanced diet.
