Full moon: what are its effects on health?

The moon has always fascinated humanity, with its mysterious glow and aura with unknown properties. If its effects on tides and agricultural crops are proven, what about our health? Sleep, menstruation, hair growth… Medisite makes the rounds of scientific studies to disentangle the truth from the false.

You come to the office and you see all your colleagues yawning or quite upset. Could it be the fault of the full moon that lit up the night before? Swiss researchers succeeded in demonstrating in 2013 that the Earth’s satellite would have effects on our sleep.

The effects of the moon on sleep

The study by chronobiology researchers at the University of Basel is based on the polygraph recordings of 33 volunteers, who were unaware of the subject of the study, so as not to influence them. Scientists have shown that sleep is disturbed four days before and after full moon phases. Patients lost an average of 20 minutes of sleep and took an additional five minutes to fall asleep.

Shortened and poorer quality sleep

The study published in Current Biology also looked at sleep quality. It reveals that the deep slow sleep phase is reduced by 30% around the full moon. Yet this is the most restorative sleep phase for the body. No wonder we feel more tired around the full moon phases.

In addition to recordings of nocturnal brain waves, blood tests have discovered that the lunar cycle would also have an impact on the production of melatonin, the sleep-regulating hormone, produced by the pineal gland. Since the human body is not affected by the gravitational effects of the moon, as are the oceans during tides, the researchers then lean towards the existence of an internal circa-lunar clock, already proven in some animal species. Like the circadian clock, it would punctuate our behaviors according to lunar cycles.

What are the links between the menstrual and lunar cycles?

Are the rules influenced by the moon? If contrary to popular belief, deliveries are not more numerous during full moons, a study by researchers at the German University of Würzburg proves the parallel between the menstrual and lunar cycles.

The study published in 2021 in the journal Science Advances was based on the writings of 22 women who recorded their periods for a long period of time (up to 32 years). Analysis of these data shows that the woman’s menstrual cycle (28 days) could, as is the case for animals, synchronize with the lunar cycle (29.5 days) in order to increase the chances of reproduction. However, the urban lifestyle, as well as artificial light, would have disrupted this synchronization.

How to synchronize your cycle with the moon?

If the study does not mention methods to synchronize the menstrual cycle again with that of the star, a book published in 1975, Lunaception: A feminine odyssey into Fertility and contraception, would propose a solution that the study would echo. Author Louise Lacey indicates that women who wish to do so must sleep in a completely black room, without a light source. On the other hand, it is necessary to let the light of the moon penetrate its chamber for the three days around the full moon or if it is not possible, turn on a lamp with a bulb of 40 watts to replicate the glow of the star.

Does the moon exacerbate mental pathologies?

Few people believe in werewolves, but many of us think that during the full moon, aggressive or even suicidal behavior is exacerbated. Myth or reality? A study by the Université de Laval in Quebec provides a categorical answer.

The full moon is no more dangerous

The study published in 2012 in the journal General Hospital Psychiatry evaluated patients who presented to the emergency departments of the Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur de Montréal and the Hôtel-Dieu de Lévis between March 2005 and April 2008. The scientific team, led by Professor Geneviève Belleville, focused in particular on 771 people who presented to the emergency room with chest pain related to psychological disorders, such as panic attacks or anxiety disorders. The researchers then compared with the lunar calendars and realized that there were no more psychological problems reported during this lunar phase.

Are there more accidents during the full moon?

While several Canadian and American studies have determined a slight increase in road accidents during the full moon, it would seem that the responsibility of our satellite in these incidents remains indirect. The explanation is, in fact, most logical: the brightness of the moon distracts drivers more and especially increases the activity of wild animals.

Does the moon accelerate hair regrowth?

Hair cut during the ascending moon grows back faster. A belief deeply rooted in popular folklore and which makes the happiness of hair salons, which promote the virtues of the Earth’s satellite on the fortification of the scalp.

Hair regrowth is not favored by the moon

Yet, no study proves that hair regrowth is favored by the moon. Hair grows between 0.8 and 1.5 cm per month (depending on the type of hair) regardless of the lunar phase. The attraction of the Moon on the human being is, in fact, very weak and therefore has no impact on the water of our body or on our blood circulation. On the other hand, it works very well for plants. It is, in fact, scientifically proven that the sap of the trees rises at the same time as the lunar star. It is therefore better to be a gardener than a hairdresser to settle on the lunar calendar!
