Nutritionists share what habits you should avoid if you want to lose weight

Losing weight is a task that is not easy for many. Immersing yourself in a diet implies including changes in diet that are not always to our liking. Once we have entered the dynamics of taking care of our health, it is convenient to get rid of those bad habits that prevent us from being able to end up with those extra kilos.

Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, many people have started working from home. Although there were people who had this custom before the lockdown, there are some employees who tend to eat in front of a screen.

Roxana Ehsani, a nutritionist and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, told Eat This that this behavior “not only decreases the pleasure around the experience of eating food but also reduces our awareness of what and how much we are eating.”

Remember to have lunch in the kitchen

The specialist states that “instead of paying attention to the flavors […] we get distracted and we can find ourselves eating quickly without having noticed what we just ingested.” In this way, it will be more advisable to change rooms (for example, the kitchen) and leave the work table for a few minutes.

This ‘bad habit’ is closely related to the following: eating in front of a screen. Ehsani argues that feeding ourselves in front of the computer, television or telephone, “can lead us to gain weight and prevent us from pursuing weight.” The nutritionist says that this causes “us to focus more on the audiovisual product than on what is on the plate, which makes us eat without thinking and do not pay attention to the signs of satiety and hunger.”

According to her, sitting in front of the TV makes us eat faster, which is the third habit that we must eliminate to lose weight and lose weight. Taking what we have on the plate at a faster rate “can lead to overeating and gaining weight, “Ehsani says. In addition, it would generate health problems at the gastrointestinal level “such as bloating, belching and stomach upset.”

What kind of diet to choose

One way to avoid this behavior is to “try to breathe deeply before you start eating and make an effort to leave the cutlery between bites.” In this way, we will not only be able to lose weight, but we will avoid suffering those gastrointestinal problems.

Speed is a factor that should not be taken into account in a second aspect: stay away from diets that seek to lose weight quickly. Nutritionist Kristen Smith says this type of eating “only leads to frustration and failure.” Remember also that it is important to “find a plan that guarantees an adequate intake that can be followed in the long term”.

To these bad habits that take place when taking food, is added one that consists of not making the necessary meals. Smith says that “the biggest mistake I see people make when it comes to losing weight is thinking that skipping meals is the best solution.” However, it is essential to give our body enough calories “to keep the metabolism active”.
