Drinking lemon juice in the morning, on an empty stomach, is a grandmother’s trick that makes many followers. But what benefits can we really expect from it? Is this acidic-tasting drink really recommended for all organisms? Juliette Delbreuve, a sophrologist, and naturopath, member of the COPLENI wellness practitioners’ collective, was asked for her expert opinion.
Drinking lemon juice in the morning on an empty stomach: a good idea, but…
A natural antioxidant for a radiant complexion
Source of vitamin C, flavonoids, and citric acid, lemon juice has a strong antioxidant power beneficial for the skin as well as for health. “It helps the body fight oxidative stress by limiting the action of free radicals, very unstable molecules that attack the cells of the body,” says Juliette Delbreuve. Pollution, tobacco, endocrine disruptors, and an unhealthy lifestyle are all factors that increase the number of free radicals. It is therefore fundamental to stock up on antioxidants. Just peel an apple and wait a few minutes to see that its flesh, exposed to the open air, turns brown… but not if you poured a few drops of lemon! “As with apples, the antioxidants in lemon juice help protect cells from premature aging and maintain a luminous complexion,” says the naturopath.
An ally of the immune system
Thanks to its vitamin C content, lemon also has antiviral and antibacterial properties that make it a good ally of the immune system to avoid winter ailments.
A detoxification stimulant
Consumed in the morning, on an empty stomach, a lemon juice diluted in warm water activates the metabolism of the liver and stimulates the production of bile. “This is particularly beneficial when we know that the liver is the recycling plant of our body,” says Juliette Delbreuve. The lemon solicitation of this organ of elimination in the morning will have a positive impact on the rest of the body: global detoxification, improved blood circulation, easier digestion, and increased vitality. »
Lemon juice, harmful to enamel and some organisms
The acidity of lemon can demineralize the enamel
Enamel is a solid layer rich in minerals that protect teeth. However, the citric acid in lemon and some citrus fruits can encourage its demineralization over time. “This can promote premature wear of the teeth and the appearance of sensitivities or cavities,” warns the naturopath. To guard against these harms, there is, fortunately, a simple solution: drink lemon juice with a straw (reusable!) to avoid direct contact with the enamel.
Lemon may be counterproductive in some organisms
« Drinking a glass of lemon juice in the morning on an empty stomach can be a healthy ritual… or not!, warns Juliette Delbreuve. If lemon tastes sour for everyone, it will be acidifying for some, alkalizing for others. Thus, according to the naturopathic constitution of the individual, a lemon consumed every morning on an empty stomach can disrupt the acid-base balance of the body, this regulation of blood pH that allows the optimal functioning of our body.
Lemon juice, beneficial in blood-bloated people
In blood-bloated (round and stocky morphology, colorful complexion, rather extroverted and jovial temperament), the body will be able to transform the citric acid of lemon into a base, and you can enjoy the benefits of lemon juice on an empty stomach in the morning in peace.
Lemon juice, potentially weakening in neuro-arthritics
In neuro-arthritics (slim morphology, sensitive to cold, pale complexion), too much and regular consumption of lemon juice on an empty stomach can promote demineralization, and lead to a weakening of the general metabolism. “The neuro-arthritic body will probably not have the ability to use the minerals in lemon to transform acidity into a base,” says the naturopath. It will therefore compensate with the minerals of the body and draw on its reserves. By imposing daily on the body a source of acidity that it does not know how to metabolize, we risk weakening the digestive system and suffering from heartburn, acid reflux.”
Are you neuro-arthritic? Don’t panic. “The reality is not as binary,” says Juliette Delbreuve. It is necessary to consult a naturopath to identify the true richness of the profile through precise observations. In the meantime, it is necessary to listen to the body, adapt the quantities ingested and the frequency according to the feelings. »
How to consume lemon juice?
Dilute the juice in weakly mineralized water
On an empty stomach, the juice of half an organic lemon is diluted in 20 cl of weakly mineralized water, at room or warm temperature. “Neuro-arthritics who insist on this morning ritual can limit themselves to a few drops of lemon in a glass of water, advises the naturopath. Other more suitable health beverages may be advised, such as a green vegetable juice »
In cure of 21 days in spring
“I advise to do this ritual in the form of a 21-day cure, especially in spring, when the sunny days are back,” recommends the naturopath. To enjoy the benefits of the fruit all year round, we also think about regularly integrating fresh lemon juice into our diet.
