So the kid grew up. And the day has come when you can give up the bottle and safely switch to drinking from a cup. But in reality, it can be difficult. And that’s why there are non-spillable cups in the world.
As a rule, you can teach the baby to drink from a cup at the age of about 7-9 months and older, when the child can already firmly hold the mug in the handle and, without missing, bring it to his mouth. But the problem is not even in the learning process itself! It often happens that as soon as a child learns a simple skill, he becomes inseparable from his favorite cup, he likes to take small sips again and again. As a result, the child can drink a huge amount of liquid, although, in fact, children under the age of one year need no more than 100 ml of fluid per kilogram of body weight, that is, if the child weighs 10 kg, then he needs to drink 1 liter of fluid per day. At the age after the year, when the baby weighs more than 10 kg, the daily requirement is 1 liter plus 50 ml for each kilogram in excess of 10 kilograms.
If the child drinks more than this norm, then there is a danger of developing anemia, because due to excessive fluid intake, the baby’s appetite decreases and the body does not receive enough nutrients, primarily iron. Many moms and dads do not think about this until they are faced with poor weight gain in the crumbs, which sometimes leads to a deterioration in the health of the child. And how do you find a middle ground?
There is a relatively small flow of liquid in the bottle, the child drinks in small sips and eventually drinks more than he really wanted. When choosing a filler, pay attention to the holes in the spout to be large enough; it is desirable that there are several of them: the flow will be strong, and the child will not drink more than necessary.
Experiment with the form
Sometimes babies refuse to even try to drink from the drinking bottle. They cannot explain what they do not like, so the task of parents is to interest the child: to pick up a bright multi-colored mug, narrowed in the middle, with comfortable handles and a soft spout that will not damage the delicate gums. The baby may not like to drink from the spout, so you can try to offer him a drinking bottle with a straw. Or first, install the nozzle in the form of a title, and after the baby gets used to it, replace it with a lid with a spout.
For a walk or on trips, it is convenient to take thermal waterers that have double walls, which allow you to maintain the temperature of the liquid for several hours.
Take your time
Sometimes it is not so easy to teach a child to drink from a drinking bottle on his own. It takes patience and time. First, the kid can simply be introduced to a new object, let him play, show by his example what and how to do. Then you need to offer the child a cup at each feeding. Accustoming the baby to the drinking bottle, you should not immediately abandon the bottle, because for the child such a sharp change can be painful. The most difficult, as a rule, is the refusal of evening feedings with milk formula or breast milk from a bottle. Therefore, it is better to offer the baby to drink from the drinking bottle in the afternoon and morning feeding. When the child will drink about 450-500 ml of milk during the day, it will be possible to gradually abandon evening feedings.
Any innovations should be introduced into the life of the baby deliberately. Do not plan changes if the child is sick, capricious or the family has a nervous situation. In these cases, children especially need the usual rituals and well-known objects.
Be on the lookout!
Children’s drinkers are so convenient and practical that, having got used to them, children can drink from them everywhere at any time. Kids everywhere carry their favorite mug with them and put it to their mouth not only to quench their thirst but also to calm down, out of boredom, or just automatically. Parents need to be careful not to allow the child to drink on the go, during outdoor games, or when the baby is trying to fall asleep – the baby can choke and be scared. The child should clearly know that you can drink from a mug only sitting or standing still. It is better if you agree with the child that the mug will always be in the kitchen or in the stroller (if you are on a walk) and in order to drink, the baby should sit in a chair in the kitchen or in a stroller.
For children from 5 to 7 months, so-called “educational” pills are used. They are multifunctional: they can be used as a bottle with a tice, as a drinking bottle with a spout or as a simple cup – there are several different nozzles in the kit. There are also pills with a valve, thanks to which the mug can be shaken and overturned, but the liquid will not shed. The baby can wear a mug even upside down, and not a drop will flow out of it. Such pills are of two types: with a soft spout for babies from 6 months to a year – and with a hard spout – for children from a year.
Take care of your teeth
If the child can already drink on his own from the drinking bottle, it is better to abandon the bottles altogether, because when sucking from the bottle, the teeth and gums are constantly washed with liquid, which can cause caries – dentists call it “bottled”. In addition, sucking a bottle at night around the age of 3 can cause teeth to spread or grow abnormally.
Many parents do not know that by giving the child juice, then milk, then fruit drink, then compote between feedings, they thus harm the baby’s teeth. Sweet liquids should be given immediately after or during a meal, and between feedings – plain water, and then the baby will not have problems with the teeth.
Nothing lasts forever
Do not forget that the drinker is just a transitional stage between a bottle and an ordinary cup. Since it is difficult for a child to learn to drink immediately from a cup (it is difficult to take sips, correctly tilt a mug, not to pour), and sippy cups, or, as they are also called, non-spillable cups, were invented. Most children, as a rule, themselves refuse drinkers and demand to give them the usual “adult” cup – this happens around the age of 2 years. But if your child does not show such interest, try to captivate him yourself, periodically offering to drink from a mug without a lid with a spout. Pour quite a bit of liquid and give to the child. Little by little, the baby will begin to drink from an ordinary cup and forget about the drinking bottle, as in due time he forgot about the bottle.

When choosing a drinking bottle, pay attention to how easily and quickly it is disassembled, since the mug will have to be washed and cleaned daily by the spout – milk and juices tend to settle on the walls of the spout holes. Keep in mind that fancy-shaped pills, such as a bagel, may have hard-to-clean areas.
