How modern cartoons affect children

A rare child does not like animation. Most willingly give up much entertainment in favor of bright pictures on the screen. What do modern children like to watch and how can cartoons affect them? Dealing with an expert.

Gone are the days when we, as children, were waiting for the weekend, boldly emphasized in the program the right time not to miss our favorite cartoons. Then it did not occur to any of the adults that cartoons have a bad effect on children. On the contrary, many watched cartoons together.

But over time, the concept of cartoons began to change. New scenarios have appeared, on the screens, you can increasingly see superheroes and villains, and not only instructive stories with the triumph of justice. Cartoons have become more accessible – first, it was videotapes and discs, now the Internet. The value of waiting and the limited choice have disappeared, you can turn on the cartoon at any time on your TV, tablet, or phone. You do not even need to specifically look for something, they literally fall on the fragile children’s psyche.

Plasticine characters were replaced by computer graphics, faded colors were replaced by bright pictures, special effects that hold the viewer’s attention for a long time. Even the voice acting has changed dramatically. Today it is rare to find pleasant young voices and melodic design, more and more screams, noise, rumble. Content, on the one hand, has become more attractive and accessible, but at the same time increasingly carries scenes of violence, demonstrates antisocial behavior, and encourages children to live anxiety and fear. Therefore, parents need to very carefully filter the material that comes across the eyes of children.

According to the ratings of popular online cinemas, last year among full-length animated films, the leading positions were taken by “Soul”, “Trolls. World Tour”, “Bigfoot Family”, “Dragon Lord”, “The Croods Family: Housewarming”. At the same time, on open online platforms, the Russian animated series “Masha and the Bear”beats records for viewing. Young viewers liked it so much that it was translated into 43 languages! And one of the series – “Masha plus porridge” – scored more than 4.4 billion views in 9 years since publication.

We conducted our survey among mothers on social networks to find out which cartoons children 3-7 years old like. The favorite of the majority was the same “Masha and the Bear”, the second place was shared by different series of “Bogatyrs”, “Fabulous Patrol” and “Fiksikov”. Next, with a slight gap, followed by “Bears Mi-mi-bears”, “Three cats”, “Luntik”, “Barboskins”, “Robots – trains”, “Leo and Teague”, “Cleo and Kukin”, “Robocar Poly”.

Looking for benefits

This is not to say that all cartoons are equally harmful or useless. Through developing cartoons, the child receives new knowledge and skills, develops a cause-and-effect relationship, expands general ideas about himself and the world. For example, the cartoons “Truck Lion”, “Trees”, “Malysariki” help to learn colors, figures, get acquainted with situations peculiar to their age: learn to share toys, empathize, follow the rules of hygiene; “Arkady Parovozov” – to master safety in an accessible form; “Fiksiki” – the skills of handling gadgets, to get an idea of their device.

In addition, inspired by his favorite cartoon, the child develops creativity, coming up with new ideas, stories, games, drawings, and crafts. It is also important that when watching cartoons, children produce endorphin hormones responsible for pleasure. Pay attention to emotions, how children often laugh, rejoice with the characters. And many cartoons can be found in the original language, this is a good incentive to learn a foreign language.

Older children are advised to watch cartoons from the series “Just about the important. About Mira and Gosha”. They raise various exciting questions, for example, how to reconcile after a quarrel or how to stop being afraid of old age. Well, for a cozy family viewing, I recommend “The Little Prince” – about kindness, responsiveness, communication, and empathy skills.

What to fear

First of all, it is necessary to limit the viewing of such cartoons, where aggression and violence are presented as the norm of behavior, and the characters can humiliate each other, beat, call names, and ridicule. Such scenes are often shown in “Oggy and cockroaches”, “Cotopes”, “SpongeBob”, etc. Children can easily transfer such behavior to the real world, losing compassion and getting a sense of impunity.

Keep in mind that the high dynamic picture in the cartoon with various special effects and surreal scenes contributes to excessive brain stimulation and, as a result, rapid fatigue, whims, and tantrums. The child fixes attention and remembers only bright images that excite the imagination. Consequently, the fewer such effects in everyday life, the easier it is for the child to get bored and lose interest, and this already threatens problems with concentration and learning. In addition, frequent and prolonged viewing of cartoons leads to a sedentary lifestyle, vision problems, difficulty sleeping.

Modern cartoons often contain sexual overtones, encouraging young children to show excessive interest in the anatomy of the opposite sex, as well as demonstrate sexual behavior in life. For example, the cartoon “Winx” shows the main characters in revealing outfits with a pronounced waist, chest, and hips. In “Royal Corgis” there is a lot of emphasis on jokes “below the belt”. What is the cost of dancing at the pole?! In this cartoon, in the gestures and behavior of the characters, the theme of sex constantly plays, children unwittingly repeat this in real life.

A child may encounter cartoons containing plots of violence and threats. The child’s psyche is not always able to process such material and this can lead to fears and phobias. For example, “Siren-headed” and “Coraline in the Land of Nightmares” often cause anxiety in children, it is difficult for them to distinguish between reality and fiction, because they animate the hero in their fantasies.
