Double the giggle, double the grin, and double the shape of your little feet if you’re lucky enough to have twins. Mothers of twins know how magical it is to have twins, and now more women are experiencing twins than ever before. That’s because there’s an official double explosion on planet Earth.
The number of twins currently on the planet is at a record high, with more twins being born than ever before. New research from Radboud University in the Nᴇᴛʜᴇʀʟᴀɴᴅs, the University of Oxford in the Uɴɪᴛᴇᴅ Kɪɴɢᴅᴏᴍand Fʀᴀɴᴄᴇ’s Institute for Dᴇᴍᴏɢʀᴀᴘʜɪᴄ Research has ʀᴇᴠᴇᴀʟᴇᴅ that one in 40 babies are twins. So why did it happen? There are two main reasons.
1. Happy age of twinning
University of Oxford researchers say twin explosions are a modern-day phenomenon. And that’s thanks to assisted reproduction and women having children later on. Professor Christiaan Monden, lead author of the report, said: “The number of twins on Earth is now at a record high. “Women give birth later and infertility ᴛʀᴇᴀᴛᴍᴇɴᴛ is becoming more and more popular and widespread.
And because age and MAR (medically supported techniques) like IVF and ovulation induction are associated with higher numbers of multiple births. These relatively older mothers are then more likely to have twins. “This is important because twins are associated with higher infant mortality and complications for the mother during ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴄʏ and delivery,” he added.
Most of the increase was in twins, or not identical. These are twins that develop from separate ᴇɢɢs ᴀɴᴅ sᴘᴇʀᴍ. The rate of identical twins, which occurs when an ᴇᴍʙʀʏᴏ sᴘʟɪᴛs in two, remains constant.
2. Global twin increase
There are now 1.6 million sets of twins born globally each year. Twin rates have increased in countries in Eᴜʀᴏᴘᴇ, Nᴏʀᴛʜ Aᴍᴇʀɪᴄᴀ ᴀɴᴅ Asɪᴀ. But 80% of all twin births today are in Asɪᴀ ᴀɴᴅ Aꜰʀɪᴄᴀ. And this concerns researchers. In sub-Saharan Aꜰʀɪᴄᴀ, many twins will ʟᴏsᴇ a co-twin within the first year of life.
That represents two to three hundred thousand ʟᴏsᴇ twins, each with a personal story. Accurately forecasting the health care needs of twins and their mothers depends on having accurate data showing how many twins are born.” The study is the first global review of twins and aims to help promote better health care for mothers.
