The Siena Awards have announced the 2021 winners of their aerial photography competition, the Drone Awards. A selection that reveals splendid scenes captured in the four corners of the globe from the air.
By taking height, a scene can sometimes reveal itself in a whole new light. Or even change into a work of art. The drone awards shots provide a remarkable demonstration of this. This competition organized by the Siena Awards rewards each year the most beautiful photographs captured from the air. And the winners of 2021 have just been announced.
For this new edition, the jury had to choose from tens of thousands of shots sent by photographers from a hundred countries. Suffice to say that the choice was not easy. Ten of them were finally rewarded: a big winner and a winner for each of the nine categories of the contest including Nature, Wildlife, Abstract, or People.
It was the photographer Terje Kolaas who won the grand prize thanks to his magnificent flight of geese. The shot was taken in central Norway as the birds flew to Svalbard in the Arctic amid a snow-covered landscape. Every year, they arrive a little earlier, probably due to climate change.© Provided by GEOPhotographer Terje Kolaas won the grand prize at the Drone Awards 2021 thanks to this magnificent flight of geese captured in Norway. © Terje Kolaas/Drone Awards 2021
But the rest of the selection, particularly varied, is also worth a look. Among them, the glowing bowels of an Icelandic volcano in full eruption, a boat in full fishing in the middle of a frozen mangrove, the journey of a green turtle that lays eggs in the sand of a beach, or in the video category an icy ballet in Greenland.
All the winning and finalist photos will be presented during the exhibition “Above Us Only Sky” on the occasion of the 7th edition of the Siena Awards Festival which will be held from October 23 to December 5 in the cloister of the Basilica of San Domenico in Siena.
