A baby’s first cold is always ʜᴇᴀʀᴛʙʀᴇᴀᴋɪɴɢ for new parents. The giggle turned to sniffle and the sweet smile was turned upside down. Although colds will eventually subside on their own, there are things you can do to ease ᴄᴏʟᴅ-ʜᴇᴀᴅᴇᴅ sʏᴍᴘᴛᴏᴍs in young children. From placing the crib at an angle to squirting breast milk quickly up your nose (yes, really!), here are eight things you can do to ease your baby’s first ᴄᴏʟᴅ sʏᴍᴘᴛᴏᴍs.
1. Remove sᴛᴜꜰꜰʏ nose
As funny as it may seem, babies can’t blow their ɴᴏsᴇs on their own, so we depend on helping clear ᴍᴜᴄᴜs ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇɪʀ ɴᴀsᴀʟ airways. The nasal aspirator will suck the waste out of the nostrils. It’s not pretty and people don’t like it, but it’s highly effective. You can also spray gentle ᴘʜʏsɪᴏʟᴏɢɪᴄᴀʟ sᴀʟɪɴᴇ or ᴅᴀʙ ᴇᴜᴄᴀʟʏᴘᴛᴜs oil on their chest or paws to help clear their airways.
2. Keep them hydrated
Keep your precious ꜰʟᴜɪᴅs on hand when they have a cold. Whether it’s breast milk or ꜰᴏʀᴍᴜʟᴀ, even if your baby isn’t drinking too much at one time, feed him more than usual to prevent dehydration. And don’t forget yourself! Especially if you’re breastfeeding, make sure you’re drinking plenty of water to keep your water and electrolytes up.
3. Humidify the air
Increasing the humidity in the air with a cool mist diffuser like the Oricom Aroma Diffuser Night Light can help reduce ᴄᴏɴɢᴇsᴛɪᴏɴ. Add a few drops of essential oil to help calm the ᴀɪʀ ʙᴜʙʙʟᴇs and put them to sleep peacefully by the light of the soft colored night light.
4. Solve the fever
Fever can be part of a cold. A cool, wet wash on the back of your neck or a gentle fan in their room can help if your lather comes up.
5. Raise the mattress
Elevating the bubbleba’s mattress is also said to relieve congestion. By elevating your loved one’s sleeping position, you can clear congestion and aid breathing. They don’t have to sleep in the clouds, just a little lift using a rolled towel or your adjustable bed partner will do the trick.
6. Try breast milk
Mums are raving about a trick midwives use to help clear a ʙʟᴏᴄᴋᴇᴅ ɴᴏsᴇ in babies. Pump a few blenders of breast milk into the baby’s ɴᴏsᴇ. Our expert midwife Edwina Sharrock says while there is no solid ᴇᴠɪᴅᴇɴᴄᴇ that this procedure works, “breast milk is full of good sᴛᴜꜰꜰ including many ᴀɴᴛɪʙᴀᴄᴛᴇʀɪᴀʟ properties. It is these properties combined with moisture that can help ʙʀᴇᴀᴋ ᴅᴏᴡɴ the slime.”
7. A little (extra) TLC
Last but certainly not least, cuddle. It may not be in the ᴍᴇᴅɪᴄᴀʟ dictionary, but long, comfortable hugs are sure to make both you and bubba feel better.
