Restrictions on going to parks, beaches, and anywhere open to enjoy the air and sun due to the Covid-19 pandemic are now a thing of the past.

But sun exposure is not just anything, it requires adequate hours and care of exposure to the sun’s rays that can be very harmful to the skin.

What we need to know

According to the National Dermatology Network of the Dr. Jacinto Convit Foundation in Venezuela, the main thing we should know is that solar radiation has a fundamental role in the synthesis of vitamin D.

In addition, it allows the absorption of calcium, very important in turn for the formation and health of bone, especially in women.

However, the risks of doing it in excess or at times of high radiation can lead to greater evils such as skin cancer.

Advice to the letter

We consulted with dermatologist Francisco Rodríguez, who made recommendations to know what is the best way to take advantage of the vitamins provided by sunlight, but also how to take care of the harmful effects.

Avoid sun exposure between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon.

In the event that it is unavoidable, “wear clothing that covers as much of the body as possible, wear hats and lenses with UV protection.”

Use sunscreen at times when you are going to expose yourself to the sun and at any time. It is important that the cream or gel you use “is broad-spectrum with a protection factor of at least 30.”

It is advisable to apply it “generously on the skin 20 or 30 minutes before exposure.” Rodriguez emphasizes that we must also apply it to areas such as the neck and ears.

“Si hay excesiva sudoración o deciden sumergirse en el agua, hay que nuevamente aplicarse el protector”, precisa.

Ir constantemente a la playa es inadecuado. Muchas personas lo hacen para mantener el bronceado. “Cuidado, eso puede acelerar el envejecimiento de la piel y por ende mayor riesgo al cáncer de piel”.

Vitamin D

According to Francisco Rodríguez, the ideal to obtain vitamin D synthesis is a controlled exposure of 15 minutes three times a week.

He recommends that just exposing the arms, legs, and part of the back is enough to get the vitamin activated.

He says it’s not necessary for the sun to impact the head and neck. “There you can wear a hat and glasses and apply sun protection.”

The idea is not to deprive yourself of sun exposure, but to be prudent and follow the indications to take advantage of its benefits and maintain healthy skin.
